The Study

The room we call a “study” is continuing to get its face-lift. Twenty years ago, when we moved here, it was Carl’s bedroom. The walls were paneled in dark wood. After he moved, it acquired a hodge-podge of furniture; a hand-me-down futon from Emily, two file cabinets, two giant wood desks, both discards from our respective work places, two computer desks, cheap bookshelves and, on the walls, a variety of artwork and calendars. Somewhere along the way it got painted a bright blue. A while back, Don switched out his big oak desk for a small roll top desk that had been his father’s. As part of our remodel, to make the room more coordinated, we got Don a new computer desk and both of us new matching bookshelves. We have been wrestling with what color to paint the walls. We want a color that will help bring everything together and create a quite, calm mood. A tall order for a room that still has seven different oak tones (including furniture and floor), five different desks and two different filing cabinets, plus five different electric lights, and two big windows that cast all kinds of light and shadows on the grooved, angled, sloping walls. Oh yes, we want it to coordinate with the other rooms.
Obliterating the blue took two coats of white paint, using a narrow brush (because of the grooves). Here are three Benjamin Moore colors we are considering:
Rich cream – exactly what it sounds like
Amulet – a low-intensity, creamy gold
Dried Basil – a soft, dusty green, tending toward a khaki color

Everyone says the green is best, but my senses respond most positively toward the other two.

I vote for "Rich Cream." It has a cozy, warm tone. The other two are nice but will look surprisingly cool and dark after dusk, I think.

By the way, that futon was bought specially for that room. Hard to believe now, eh?

  2. After we painted, we watched the green turn a deep gray color at night, not what we anticipated! The cream becomes almost white and the gold remains rather true. The cream tends toward yellow in the sunlight. We have chosen a brick red for the little "Eldon" desk; our contrast color. It is prettiest with the gold, and I find I am emotionally drawn to the gold. But the final decision will wait until after my trip.

  3. "Photos on the wall" help, compared to the text names for the paints used previously. Still, a bit hard to imagine/consider the effects of lighting, and the many other colors you already have in furniture and floors. I do think they are all good colors, though . . . Peaceful, comfortable.

Why do you want to coordinate with other rooms?

Why not let this room be a departure, to step into another environment, compared to other parts of your house, if the colors lead that way?

Selfishly, I'd like to have a room entirely to my own design, to flamboyantly, or gently, express myself, period.

Question: What is a "little Eldon desk?"

And by the way, in case you have forgotten, this date, March 16, is the birthday of Charles Eldon Scripter, Dad, who being born in 1907, would be 104 years old today, were he living. But he passed in 1989, 22 years ago. My, how time has flown.

    Sam I am . . .
